A traditional arts festival focusing on performances from Tabanan will be held at the regency’s famous lakeside tourist destination, Ulun Danu Beratan, in Bedugul village early next month.

The festival is aimed at increasing tourist arrivals in one of Bali’s most photographed tourist sites, which offers the panoramic view of a temple in the middle of Beratan Lake. Held for the first time, this event will be organized by 18 customary villages in Baturiti district.

“We want to offer something new and attract more visitors, because all of this time we have only ‘sold’ the views,” Wayan Mustika, the tourist attraction’s head of operations, said representing the customary villages.

He added that this is also part of their effort to preserve the local cultures of Tabanan, particularly its traditional dances and food.

This festival will be held once a week, every Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. starting July 5 until August 22. Around July and August, tourist arrivals to Ulun Danu Beratan usually increase, partly because of the school holidays. Another peak season is during the year-end
holiday.

“July and August is the right moment to hold this festival. We will also hold a similar event in December when the number of visitors is larger than the rest of the year,” he told Bali Daily. During the major Islamic celebration of Idul Fitri that falls in August this year, the festival will take place for three days in a row, he added.

Among the performances that will be held are traditional dances, including Okokan, Janger Genjek, Topeng, and Joged Bumbung presented by 18 art groups from 18 customary villages. Tourists can also enjoy a buffet of traditional food during the event.

To further improve Ulun Danu Beratan, the management of the tourist site recently visited Toba Lake in North Sumatera to learn how to manage the destination.

Mustika said they are now renovating souvenir kiosks at the location to provide better services for visitors. Around 60 percent of the project has already been completed, with full completion scheduled for August.

Wayan Adnyana, head of the Tourism and Culture Agency in Tabanan, said the tourism sector in the regency continued to improve, as indicated by the increase in tourist arrivals.

“Destinations in Tabanan are becoming more popular, including the water temple at Ulun Danu Beratan, Tanah Lot, Jatiluwih rice fields and Soka beach,” he said.

“We will continue to push the destinations that are not yet developed. We are doing better promotion.”

Tanah Lot remains the most popular attraction in Tabanan. Located in Beraban village, 30 kilometers from Denpasar, it offers a scenic view that combines beach, water temple and sunset. It is usually crowded with tourists in the afternoons.

He expressed his appreciation to the management of Ulun Danu Beratan for holding an art festival, hoping that the event would successfully attract more visitors.
